Behavior Couseling
The sad truth is that more dogs and cats are put to sleep because of behavioral problems than are put to sleep because of disease and injury. Good behavior can help make your pet safer and more enjoyable, but it takes an effort on your part—and we can help. We can help determine the cause of disorders such as separation anxiety and obsessive behavior, and then develop a treatment regimen.
If you’re considering a new pet, we can help you select the perfect pet.
If you’re having problems with a current pet, we can provide advice regarding the correction of problems such as excessive barking, chewing, spraying, scratching, digging, house soiling, aggression and many others.
Behavior Services Offered: Gentle Leader Halter Fitting – For Dogs Only – 40-60 minute appointment includes fitting and instruction with one of our trained behavior counselors
- Gentle Leaders, created by Premier Pet Products, are head halters that are used for positive reinforcement training methods. These halters were created to be used in place of pinch and choke collars when training dogs. Gentle Leader halters, very similar to what horses wear, have a calming effect on the dog.
- We can show you how to fit your dog, adjust the collar, and work with your dog so that you can begin training your new puppy or teaching your adult dog how to properly walk on a leash without pulling your arm out of socket.
- You can purchase a Gentle Leader halter from the Broad Ripple Animal Clinic or from Bark Tutor at 2122 Broad Ripple Ave.
Pet Selection – Dogs & Cats – 60 minute appointment
- The #1 reason pets are relinquished is behavior problems. We at the Broad Ripple Animal Clinic want to make sure that the pet you choose is ideal for your lifestyle and that it will be a lifelong companion. We can sit down with you and help you choose the right pet so that you can develop a lasting relationship.
Home Visits – Dogs & Cats 1˝-2 hours
- Home visits are available for both dogs and cats, but are designed primarily for cats because very often they will not exhibit the same behaviors in the clinic that they exhibit at home.
- Home visits also benefit dogs who require behavior modification that would be easier to accomplish in a large space, or to change behavior in a specific environment.
Office Consultations
- Office consultations give us a chance to address behavior and/or training issues.
Telephone Consults – Dogs & Cats 1-1˝ hours
- Office or Home Consultations work best, but if you don’t live near the clinic, we offer Telephone Consultations.
Once you’ve scheduled an appointment, you may be asked to complete a questionnaire and return it to the clinic prior to your behavior consultation. We can either mail these forms to you , or you can download them here. ◦ Pet Selection ◦ Owner’s Evaluation: K9 ◦ Owner’s Evaluation: Feline
